Mathematics teachers help students understand math in its many forms, including algebra, geometry and calculus. You will learn to help students apply these skills, relieve "math anxiety" and realize their ability to work with numbers. Math skills are in high demand in the workplace, increasing the demand for high-quality math teachers who can educate students to fulfill the need.

Making paper airplanes in class is not only guaranteed to capture the imagination of students – teachers get excited, too. Debra Monson uses the activity to teach mathematics, as well as engineering concepts. As they flew their own paper planes - some nosediving on take-off, others gliding - future educators considered what they learned about design and redesign, as well as the many ways they could couple math with the activity – among them, measuring flight distance and speed, and the weight, symmetry and surface area of the planes.

“I try to get kids involved and let them discover math on their own,” said Will Abbott, who teaches algebra at all levels, from accelerated students to students who are struggling. “St. Thomas did a really good job of training me. We spent a lot of time in the classroom, and we got a lot of special education ideas.” He encourages new math teachers because the need is great, and, he adds, “We always need teachers who can make math exciting for students instead of dreading it!”
